After a long wait we recieved a box by post from Igloolik. It was really exciting to open it up and find things that they had made, as well as letters and everyday items, such as carvings, hockey cards and books.
We were really pleased to find out that we had won the 'British Council's Intermediate International School Award'. The certificate will be framed on the wall at the reception to our school.
On Thursday 19th March we video conferenced with the Year 6 class at Ataguttaaluk School. We asked some questions about the animals which the children see and found out that they hunt for walrus and seals. They told us that they enjoy maths and spelling at school but don't play any instruments.
We played a game of 0s & Xs on the smartboard with them and then played a traditional Orcadian fiddle tune for them. It was cool!
We were filmed by local TV and our own Glaitness TV cameras were turned on. Watch out for BBC School Report 2009, broadcast on Thursday 26th March, where we will report on our video conference in some more detail.
A few weeks ago we chose some items which we think describe our everyday lives in Orkney and put these in a box to send to Igloolik. We put a DVD of a film we made about our school in the box too. FInally our box arrived and here are some pictures of the children opening it. We are really looking forward to getting a box back from them.
Glenn Morris was recorded in Igloolik talking about his preparations for the last phase of his Arctic Expedition, a dog sled journey of 1,000 miles, with the aim of drawing attention to the effects of climate change on the animals and communities who live there. We also telephoned Shontell, the teacher at the Ataguttaaluk Elementary School in Igloolik, and listened to her answer questions about the pictures she sent us. We listened to her on the speakerphone.

We went to the pool to find out about how Inuit hunters travelled and the skills they need to have to paddle a kayak. We found that they need to be good at aiming, balancing, turning, and getting out of the water quickly if they capsized. Hunting in a kayak could be very dangerous.
